Today I am reviewing a brand new app by the Virtual Speech Center -Articulation Carnival (requires iOS 7 or later; compatible with iPad). Virtual Speech Center did a great job creating a fun app, where the kids get to go to a “carnival’ and practice their articulation at the word, phrase, and sentence levels.
Much like all their other apps, this one is super easy to use and very intuitive to navigate. With a variety of options to boot. Applicable to children of all ages beginning with 2+ years, it’s phoneme targets include 20 pictures per phoneme and per word position as well as phrases and sentences. All phonemes are editable which is a very convenient options for therapists who need to customize their client’s phoneme lists based on the child’s present level of ability and needs.
The front screen of the app offers several choices when you first open the app.
The settings allow SLPs to choose what type of parameters to show (e.g., rewards, scores, sounds, text, etc.,).
After you modify the settings for you convenience it’s time to add/select a student and play the game.
Select the sounds you want to work on and start your practice.
Below is a shot of what a typical screen looks like
SLP’s have the option of recording the child’s productions, having the child to judge how he thought he produced a specific word by pressing on 1 of 3 buttons located on the right which denote, correct, incorrect and “approximate” responses as well as moving on to the next sound.
After the child has practiced a certain number of trials in a set, it’s time for the reinforcers, which consist of 4 different carnival games:
- Hammer Game
- Balloon Dart Throw
- Basketball Free Throw
- Duck Spraying Game
Things I like about this app:
It’s very easy to navigate. SLPs can easily switch to different word positions, write notes, as well as switch between multiple users. Recording and playback features are very helpful for data collection as well as immediate feedback for the children in order for them to judge the accuracy of their productions. Having access to tons of images from the library is very useful as well.
After the sessions, all reports with the student information (e.g., phoneme, level, position, score, and percentage correct) can be easily accessed along with the lists of presented words. Audio recordings and written session notes are available to you as well. If you need a more detailed report then tap the “Reports” feature on the main screen to access the data by goals or dates. These reports can then be emailed to self or parents.
You can find this awesome app on iTunes for $36.99, or you can enter my giveaway below to win your very own copy.

This app seems like a perfect addition for my iPad. My kids are so motivated and love apps on the iPad.
I work with a large amount of artic kiddos in an ELL setting in low income charter schools. Any new apps or artic activities I can put in front of them make me happy and my job a little bit easier.
